The State of California Department of General Services (DGS) is responsible for facilities at Caltrans District 11 Headquarters located in San Diego’s Old Town neighborhood. Earlier this year, DGS awarded Layer3 Security Services® a contract for upgrading the video surveillance system at this location from standard resolution analog to high resolution IP video. “In addition to providing best value, Layer3 Security Services® brought a demonstrated ability to tackle technically demanding applications, said Dan White, Building Manager”.

Layer3 Security Services® upgraded analog PTZ and fixed-box cameras to Pelco Sarix High Resolution IP cameras. Camera resolutions were carefully selected in order to provide the desired pixels-on-target for the various parking lots and driveways surrounding this large office complex. The video management solution selected by Layer3 Security Services® was Pelco’s Digital Sentry executing on an Intransa server and storage device.

“Perhaps the most challenging portion of this project was the transmission of Ethernet from cameras to storage. Lots of money was saved by utilizing media converters from NVT, which allowed us to convey fast Ethernet signals over the existing coaxial cables while powering many of the cameras using PoE. Additional savings were realized by leveraging unused capacity in the multimodal fiber network providing intra-building communication. In the end, we made the most of existing infrastructure and newly deployed systems and provided seamless, effective and low cost transmission of streaming video from camera to the storage server, said Sara Haber Santana, CEO of Layer3 Security Services®”.
